An Architectural Alphabet

An Architectural Alphabet is an exhibition and book project that comprises 26 small-format watercolors incorporating the letters of the alphabet in architectural or garden-themed vignettes. Taking their inspiration from Ancien Régime France and the Grand Tour, the watercolors evoke the playfulness and exoticism that inspired the architects and garden designers of the period.

The ensemble of watercolors was first exhibited at the Galerie de Bayser, Paris, France's foremost Old Master drawings dealers, during the month of September, 2008.

The companion limited-edition book was launched at Archivia Books in Manhattan on the 20th November, 2008.

The Book

To coincide with the opening of the exhibition, Connaissance et Mémoires published the watercolors in a limited-edtion artist's book of the same title. The small-format volume (7 x 8½ in., 96 pages) presents the alphabet in a collector's edition of exceptional quality and is prefaced by Charlotte Moss, the Manhattan-based interior designer (the Marquis de Breteuil, proprietor of the Château de Breteuil, prefaces the French edition).

In keeping with the lighthearted spirit of the original watercolors, the book is rich in color, with graphic endpapers and saffron-yellow and juniper-green silk covered boards—a primer on the ABCs for children of all ages.

As well as reproducing the alphabet watercolors, the volume includes an introductory essay tracing the sources of inspiration for the watercolors, and concludes with an illustrated essay tracing the history of artist's alphabets from the Renaissance to the present day.

An Architectural Alphabet is is limited to 400 copies in each language, and is signed and numbered and bound in grey silk, in the Chinese fashion, and slipcased. The same quality papers and advanced printing techniques used for our previous artist's books, Chinoiseries and Versailles, ensures that this volume meets those exceptional standards.
